Wander not thine eyes

When your eye turns to another,

Those years shared, ebbing,

And soon to be no more.

The memory flags up the time,

Whence eyes locked, unison for the first time…

My mind never possessed thoughts, times negative,

When togetherness would falter.

The beauty lies with the beholder,

All but for the briefest of moments.

Wishes dashed as in a maze,

No way out, my eyes without clout,

Loyalty cares not for the victim.

A glance towards another equates

As the dagger piercing ones heart.

Time calls an end to all that we embrace.

Life moves us rampantly toward our selected goals.

To kingdom come then I will be done

Without a care, life unfair.

Her stare never casting towards my soul.

I like the seeming lack of morality in this. It reminded me of reading Joyce. The reciter in a grimy saloon bar; alcohol-fuelled and giving some self-justification whilst pretending he’s past the need for redemption… Then again, I just liked it… It painted pictures. Oh, did I tell you I enjoyed it?

Your poem is a brilliant write! I am sold on it even though, personally, I find there is too much acceptance in our modern society for straying eyes (and bodies!) That being said, you painted a picture that left little gaps in the information given that required me to fill them in with my imagination, and where my mind added dabs of mental paint, the scene became almost acceptable. 😉 Deserving of the nib, I feel. You certainly haven’t lost your touch!

These lines stand out for me:

Time calls an end to all that we embrace.
Life moves us rampantly toward our selected goals.
