To Jess

Je ne regrette rien? Huh.

I never wanted you back so much
As that moment I glimpsed you
Walking arm in arm with him,

Your man for the future
Who promised much
And tattooed your name above his heart
In proof of his devotion.

I cannot forget your naked steps from our bed
After nights of passion
And those misty-eyed evenings
Cuddling watching Brief Encounter.

That time we hot footed from Tralee
My banjo on the camper roof
I hope whoever found it
Plays it better than me.

The night our tent collapsed
In Hurricane Bob at Robin Hood’s Bay
We wrote vows of everlasting love
And rolled them tight in the bottle
Of rum we supped to keep us warm.

You tossed it to the sea
It smashed against the jetty.

One morning, still merry,
You baptised me
With icy water
As I stepped from the shower.

Great days. Magical days.
We laughed. We danced.
We wept together in joy and love
And sometimes hurt.

But my deep unfaithfulness,
Sublime dishonest detachment
Deceptions, evasions and lies
Became too much for you.

I never wanted you back so much
As that moment I glimpsed you
Walking arm in arm with him.

“Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got til its gone”
There is something in your poetry so deeply honest, that sometimes exposes our worst impulses as well as our best.

Because I haven’t commented doesn’t say I don’t like it.
Commented. Have I! Well there you go. So I do like it…Tony
