Some Guys
This piece lacks ‘finish’ – it has lain forgotten in my docs. I uncovered it and posted it as an counter to the bad press some blokes are rightly getting – not all men are the same.
There are men whom ‘death has not undone’
Loving, lending, forgiving, sharing men.
They don’t make celebrity magazines
No man sees them but they don’t go unseen.
There are men, unsung heroes
Mining nightly through sewage channels
Hacking at fatbergs from takeaways
To protect the ‘bloated’ from listeria.
There are men, uneducated, illiterate
Who wake before dawn to clean office suites
Or valet motor cars they’ll never drive
Just so their families eat.
There are men at cancer ward windows
Fathers, hugging their clustered children tight
As their mother wastes away in pain
And telling them it will be okay.
There are men in custody battles,
Fighting back tears as their children
Are raised by their mother’s replacement stranger
He’s got a semi in the suburbs, drives an Audi.
There are men, quiet men
Who live insignificant lives
Targeted by cold call scammers
Whose aim is bleeding them dry.
There are men who love football
Wear a scarf supporting their local team
And are offended by the foul mouthed
Soul wounding chanting surrounding them.
There are men, gentle men
Who would not hurt an injured fledgling
Subject to random violence at the hands of
Militaries from alien lands.
There are men who cannot force themselves
Into the too tight shoes of greedy commerce
Nor fight their way onto a commuter train
To avoid being ‘hot desk’ loser of the day.
There are men whom ‘death has not undone’
Loving, lending, forgiving, sharing men.
They don’t make celebrity magazines
No man sees them but they don’t go unseen.
Hi coolhermit I like it it is a very good subject, but as you say it requires quite a bit of editing.Do it, it could be a winner. Be lucky, Peter.
Thanks, I might get it ready for my book next Spring = it ain’t my taste or style really – it was knocked out and has been ignored for a few years – present news etc brought it to mind. I’ll see whether it will get ‘the treatment’ sometime over winter 🙂
Rick.
This is a great poem. A little rough around the edges but it says a lot. Yes its true that most men are like the ones portrayed here, but we have to make sure the evil ones are not allowed to hide from their crimes. They must pay a heavy price for what they do as they mark all men as creepy and we’re simply not. A nice read here!
Cheers, Jay – it’s probably 3 or 4 rewrites from being anywhere near finished – but I thought I’d give it an airing anyway given the news and stuff 🙂 I performed it occasionally maybe 2 years ago and it was well received but there’s a chasm between spoken word and read off the page work. It might make it into next Spring’s book – time will tell 🙂 Rick.
I like this a great deal, please don’t tidy it up too much, I enjoyed its simple honesty and genuine feel, reminding us there are always men that are kind and caring and not foul mouthed bullies or prowling predictors.
Sue.
