West Side Story
Snapshot of a scene from the eponymus musical show.
(From my poetry collection “Reflections”)
They’ll be fighting, tonight, in Central Park
with razors, flick knives and knuckle-dusters.
The confrontation will happen after dark
highly charged with hostility, not blusters.
A blade will flash
under the streetlight
before
the lethal thrust.
The Jets and the Sharks will face each other
to resolve their dispute once and for all.
Like latter-day Montagues and Capulets
they’ll be fighting, tonight, in Central Park.

Well penned Luigi you capture the tension well and the imagery of the knife fight is well choreographed. Best Keith
“West Side Story” is without any doubt my favourite musical. It has many good tunes and dances and the fighting scene between the Sharks and the Jets is, I believe, pivotal to the show.
An old-style prologue, it’s whetted my appetite for more action, Nice one, Luigi,
Gerald
Hi Gerald, I see that this short piece might be seen as a preface to a longer narrative. My aim was to give a sketch of what I considered to be the main thrust of the musical to those who were familiar with the show or to whet one’s appetite to learn more about the topic being described.
I was also experimenting with a different poetic format.
Cheers.
