shrine on a high bridge
shrine on a high bridge
tight to the railings;
baby’s palm print,
blue bootees
cellophane wrapped freesias
and, scrawled in black crayon –
tear sodden,
tear sodden,
“please pray for baby and me.
Life has got too much for me.
I’m sorry. I’m sorry.
Don’t think badly of me…
I’m sorry, Jilly”
on the walkway
a candle stub
an empty bottle of Beaujolais.

Very sad. This made me think about Hemingway’s classic one line tragedy.
Ah yes – his 4 word short story! Thanks for the reminder 🙂
Rick.
ps an afterthought: I could rewrite the last verse here thus
‘on the high bridge walkway’
a candle stub
an empty bottle of Beaujolais.
Personally I wouldn’t change it, Rick.
I think it speaks for itself but it has a nice touch of mystery to get the reader/audience thinking
But it’s your poem to do as you want with it 😉
Cheers – I won’t alter it – my revision was a kinda afterthought is all 🙂
Rick.
