Thanks Santa
Happy Christmas
Excitement is bubbling, as we hang fairy lights
At last we’ve arrived, at our favourite night
Mother is singing, as we trim the tree
The spirit of Christmas, fills us with glee
Dad tells a story, about Christmas Grinch
And how we’d be sorry, if presents were pinched
His smile steals our fears, removes any dread
We sip our hot chocolate, then go up to bed
Wriggling around, beneath the warm quilt
Giggling decreasing, as energy wilts
Hush now, go to sleep, our Mother scolds
We snuggle up close, to keep out the cold
Beckoning sandman will not be denied
We drift off to sleep, on night’s rising tide
Safe and secure in the land of our dreams ?
Then I see the Grinch, waken up with a scream
Cuddles from Mother, as she scowls at Dad
Close your eyes little man, don’t look so sad
Saint Nick has already, left the north pole
Snowmen are watching, through eyes made of coal
In the depths of my dreams, I can see all the elves
Taking the presents, down from the shelves
Piling them high, on the big Christmas sleigh
Ready for Santa to take them away
They all get delivered, on the same night
How can this be?, it doesn’t seem right
An angel from heaven, delays midnight chimes
For one night each year, they’re frozen in time
Sound of the sleigh bells, jingle on the roof
In my imaginings, I see Rudolph’s hoof
I open the curtains, but can’t see a thing
In dreamland was certain, I heard a bell ring
Snow covered lawns, reflect light on the dark
Soon will be dawn, but what are those marks?
Fresh reindeer hoof prints, a pair of sleigh tracks
Santa Clause holding, a big present sack
Just like his picture, with red suit and wellies
A shiny black belt, to hold in his belly
He looks up and smiles, from a face full of wrinkles
Ho! Ho! he cries, and I see his nose crinkle
New snow starts to fall, disguising his tracks
With silent footsteps, he makes his way back
I watch as the reindeer, take him to the stars
My eyes demand sleep, for at least one more hour
Waken up! waken up!, my Mother is calling
It’s Christmas morning, the snow is still falling
I dash down the stairs, and run out to the lawn
Hoof prints are covered, sleigh marks are gone
Dad! I saw Santa Clause, leaving our gifts
His tracks have been hidden by the snow drifts
We open our presents before breaking fast
Christmas seems almost, too good to last
As a great Christmas day, comes to a close
I think about Santa, and Rudolph’s red nose
Be blessed one and all, grow joy from despair
Thank Santa Clause, when you say your prayers
A jolly read.
Noticed that a couple of commas were in the wrong place –
New snow starts to fall, disguising his tracks
With silent footsteps, he makes his way back
I watch as the reindeer, take him to the stars
As a great Christmas day, comes to a close
