I can insert the page numbering easily enough, starting at  1.

But how would I start a new document starting at a different number?     I have searched the internet, and all the instructions are as clear as mud!

Simple page numbering

The simplest case is to have the page number at the top of every page and nothing more. To do this, put the cursor on the header and select Insert > Fields > Page Number.

Page number in header
Page number inserted in the header.

Presto! Now, the correct page number appears on every page.

Does this answer your query?

Afraid not.     As I said, I can do that easily enough.      I want to be able to start a new document with a page number further on than 1.      I write monthly online articles, and wish the page numbers to carry on consecutively.   For instance, issue 1 if an article might contain pages 1 to 18.  The next issue, I would therefore want to begin at page 19.    No doubt it can be done, but so far, I have failed to find out how.

I finally found out how to do it:

Put cursor at top of page

Select "Format - Paragraph"

Select "Text Flow" - Tick "Insert"

Select "Page" - Change to "Before"

Page style - Select "Default"

Specify page number required to start.

Click OK

This is basically what the instructions suggested, but shown in a much  clearer manner.
