I started writing an introduction to myself and halfway through it disappeared off the screen. Did it arrive anywhere? I am new to 'posting' and clearly don't understand the mechanics of it. I didn't click on any buttons - so what happened?

Were you using the Forum? I don't know why it should disappear before you were able to submit but if you didn't press any button it simply vanished.

Thanks Ionicus. I'll start again!

I write Crime/thriller dramas that cross genres and are all based in both Australia and the UK. I grew up in Australia, but have lived in the UK for many years, currently in Merseyside. After retiring from my teaching job I spent seven years doing house refurbishments. Desperately needing a break from that last year I started writing, using ideas I'd had hanging around my head for some years. As yet I am unpublished but I am about to go down the self-publishing route.

Self publishing is a bit of a minefield and I am sadly lacking in experience of using platforms like social media. It's going to be tough, but I am determined to give it a go. If anyone has tried self publishing I'd appreciate feedback on what works and what doesn't. Thanks

Hello Ellie.  A welcome from me too and I also look forward to reading your work. I  write mainly poetry and occasionally stray into prose but only for flash fiction or 'droubbles' (stories limited to 200 words exactly).
I've self-published and as you are asking for feedback on the subject perhaps you'd be interested in the following piece I wrote (albeit for another website). Here is the link:

Thanks Ionicus,

The link was helpful (as was some of the reply post you received). I intend to only publish on Amazon Kindle and have POD copies with Create-Space (also Amazon) in the first instance. My understanding is that they want to tie you to only them for 12 months. I haven't started the process, so I don't know if this is correct. I am still looking at 'promoting' my first book at this stage (and I don't seem to be doing to well with that) - pre-publishing. I hope to launch the first one in early December once I've done a final proof read and checked there are no missed mistakes.

Hello and welcome to UKA.

I have self published a couple of times via Lulu.com and that seems to have worked very well for me. I'm not that great at those things myself but it was a simple straightforward process. You are in the right place as UKA is full of knowledgeable and nice people who I'm, sure will help you feel  at home here and help with your writing and self publishing.

Have you looked at these threads:

Welcome!

Jay.

I had such things when I forgot to put the cursor in a row where I need to enter information, so everything I entered was simply not entered. Several times the same thing led to the opening of the script window. I would like to read your works, because I really like to read the plays of other authors. I'm currently working with zip job to prepare myself a high-quality resume and portfolio, so I could finally start printing my works and get paid for it.
