Does this mean there will be no more UKA at all, or will things return to normal after the hibernation?
Probably be just a forum with a link to archived submissions.
I see, so probably not open for new submissions.
No. Sorry. Lots and lots of places on the web now to post writing.
Good luck 🙂
Thank you, I’m on a few on Facebook, they are okay but no real feed back. UKA is a very special site, and has been for many years I will miss the extra inspiration to get writing. And of course reading all the new submissions from others.
This is heart-sink news but not entirely surprising. So many of the originals are gone, one way or the other and though I hoped to be back and participating much more, health issues and family problems have taken up my time.
Also, the way the world has descended into hell, has all but extinguished any optimism and it's been a personal challenge to keep going, as death tolls and serious illnesses globally are soaring out of control and they are coming for the kids next. 🤬
There are so many things that stifle the urge to write in this present time, as we lurch from one potential disaster to another. I could write about it till the cows come home but censorship is rampant, as is division in all communities.
I do hope we can safely take UKA out of mothballs once this invisible war on the people is over. Better times are coming and the lifting of spirits will, I am sure, make people feel like writing again. There is a deep gloom hanging over the nations just now and it filters down to individuals. 😢
I wish all of you the very best and thank you Richard for everything you tried to do. 👍
Till better days!

What we need is financial help, open membership, with an effective gatekeeper, and a moderator working only to T & C rules? Hopefully too, with new members willing to be more interactive, acknowledging and encouraging. But may be too late?
I offered Richard financial help 6th April, but received no reply. I think it's more to do with the amount of daily time needed to keep a potentially busy international writing site running and moderated, but also ticking over by acknowledging and encouraging contributors, keeping everything inclusive, in the way Andrea used to do (probably with much help from e-griff)? Difficult to find someone with her qualities, someone with literary interest and experience, but also, outward and social. May well need two or three with life so time consuming and tiring these days.
I agree with Alison on a rapidly changing, apparently worsening world as far as safety, freedoms and culture, the loss of unique individualism and conversely, mutual enthusiasm, and therewith loss of the creative incentive, is concerned, and with AI increasing, digitalised, homogenised, humanity can only get worse.
Thanks Richard, for past times (all twenty years), and to all still reading! Contributions will probably continue to trickle in as the site goes towards its end... 🥀
It's sad to see UKA winding up but I think we all knew it was coming to the last chapter a long time ago.
I joined in 2003 when it was a thriving site and full of great submissions, excellent critique, good humour and interesting characters. I learned a lot about writing and met some very talented people on the way. It's unfortunate that the 'on the ground' moderator (not Jim) didn't clamp down on two or three persistently disruptive elements (we all know who they were) and it eventually led to many valued members drifting away, which loosened the site's foundations. I often wonder what happened to them.
None of this was the fault of Andrea and Richard and it's commendable that they twice managed to resurrect the site, although with depleted membership. I haven't been around much lately because I've been sending my work to agents and had to remove all my subs because of the prior-publishing online requirements (plus my mis-spent younger days have finally caught up with me 😥 )
Well, best of luck to everyone and heartfelt thanks to Andrea and Richard for what was once the best writing site this side of Pluto.
The End. ☹️
I've been trying to become an active member here over the last 5 or 6 years and every time I've tried something else happens in life to take me away again. I'm so sad to see that this site going away. I've been a member since 2003 and was back then, for several years, an active user daily of the site and the forums. The site was so busy and alive back then and I made a few friends and learned a whole lot about the craft of writing and read some superb poetry and prose here. So many people have took a step into the world of writing as a result of this site. Many books have been published and even a few have become full time writers. That is what this site has nurtured, encouraged and created over its twenty plus years. I send a huge amount of thanks to Richard and Andrea for giving us this place and for maintaining it for so long, doing so over such a long period of time is not easy, and I'm sure in recent times has been incredibly heart-breaking and difficult as the site slowly faded. I know in recent years it has dwindled to where it finds itself today but with so much competition online and with many of the regulars moving away, and sadly some people having passed on, it has become a monument to what it was and what it could be. Those of us that have seen the great times here miss those days, I certainly do, and I'm so glad to have had an outlet to share my somewhat mediocre written offerings. It was only by chance I clicked on the site tonight to see this news but I'm glad to have this opportunity to say goodbye to the site and to whoever reads this.
Whatever comes next for you guys, all of you, I hope it is good. I send my love and best wishes to you all. Until we cross paths again down the road sometime... Goodbye. Thank you UKAuthors for everything that you gave to me and so many over such a long period of time. You will be remembered with fondness.
