Nice to see that 'pickers' (whoever they are) are in action again. Pity that the 'nibs' are not updated on the 'Editor's picks' page, nor are they shown on the front page or authors' pages and therefore likely to be out of sight out of mind.

It is indeed great to see a new breath of fresh air in the nibbers department! 😊 I agree totally though. I have brought this up several times if I am not mistaken. Nibs are treasures to those who are awarded them and are signposts to exceptional work to a casual reader new to the site, or any of us actually.

We may sometimes feel a piece did not deserve such an accolade or we may feel that exceptional pieces were missed. When I first came, sometimes other people would suggest a nib and it at times had the desired effect on the nibbers! 😏

Our dearly loved and not forgotten Sunks used to have his own seal of approval a 'Bernard' and even Griff used to VERY rarely award a 'Griff Pick' irrespective of the nibbers (although I am convinced he was one but this was for a poem par excellence in his view. 👍

What I am saying is that awarding good work is a win win situation. I have commented on work to be told that they "were working on it" or "just posted it etc"

That imho is not really acceptable. 👎 🧐

I am not saying that people should consider their work complete after posting. Countless times I and others have altered our work several times according to critique. What I AM saying is a lazy attitude and a could not care less attitude to good grammar and spelling brings the site level down. Fact.

I do hope the winners of Nibs are encouraged and the evidence of their success should be apparent on all their pages.

It is great to see pieces being "picked" again. The "Pickers" did seem to have gone into hibernation for the last few months.

Okay. A simple yes or no to the following questions:

1) Nibs and Picks are terms for exactly the same thing: submissions that warrant a special mention.

2) Nibs/Picks are chosen by an anonymous group of members on the forum.

3) Nibs/Picks should stay with the poems, and be easily accessed.

4) My rolling up one trouser leg and disporting myself on the back of a goat will not influence a pick/nib in my favour.

Question 4 can be ignored, as a lamentable lack of gravity on my part.

Dear Dodge, it isn't always a matter of yes or no. This is not an attempt on my part to dodge your questions, BTW, but to enlarge on the subject.

!) Yes and no. It should be awarded to a first-rate poem or story but I have read nibbled pieces that in my humble opinion were not up to scratch, didn't receive any comments, but must have been fancied by a picker. The judgment is subjective.

2) Yes, they are anonymous but we don't know how many there are, who appoints them, though we must assume it's the editor; what is also 3nknown is whether they work collectively or individually in reaching a decision.

3) Opinions vary but I understand the majority of readers would like to easily access other members' page and see on that page a list of picks. I may be wrong on this issue and stand to be corrected.
4) That kind of behaviour would definitely gain you a pick because you would have demonstrated true originality. {pear}:laugh:

@ionicus.

Thanks Luigi. And if I grok you correctly the answer to question 1) is yes, but only as far as Nibs and Picks are different terms for the same thing, notwithstanding any merit accruing to the nibbed/picked work?

Re Question 2). You have confirmed my worst fears - of a shadowy conclave of cloaked and hooded masterminds, who meet in the crypt of All Saints Basildon, where they cast the bones, sacrifice a virgin - that being optional due to the low state of public morals - and utter incantations to arrive at their choices. Either that or they are just regular members who remain anonymous to ensure no bias - but I would prefer it to be the former!

Re Question 3). I would be with the majority on getting easier access.

Re question 4). Darn it! Looks like my having to work harder.

Best, Dodge {pear}:smile:

 p.s. I've noticed that any comments I post on the Forum result is an email to me, asking me to confirm my membership! Most odd.

@dodgem

the email asks to confirm subscription to the post, not membership. The answer is to untick the box which says:  Subscribe to this topic when writing a comment.
