Free Markets

Where are the peaches of yesteryear

that smeared you with juice from ear to ear.

Now they’re even, clean and pristine.

The ones without fuzz called nectarines.

Aldi and Lidl selling them cheap.

Tesco and Carrefour have expensive heaps.

The obvious truth; they’re all the same.

Grown under plastic on the plains of Spain.

Picked by machines from identical trees

for neat plastic boxes kept in deep freeze.

Put in trucks from Poland and Romania.
