Scotland 2013

A friendly parting of the ways is the least our now exhausted Union deserves.

We are the new Children of Israel;
the twelfth tribe, far from the land of Canaan.

Let our People go.

Working with simple straw and mud
we built a once far-flung Empire.
Holding to our own Gods
we spurned the unholy cow
who birthed this decade’s Golden Calf.

Let our People go.

Stiff-necked, proud and unrepentant
we eat the bitter herbs
of what has become our annual Passover.
Slaves to an Old Etonian Pharaoh;
the long lost tribe of Europe.

Let our People go.

Mark my words, 0′ Egypt;
this Union isn’t written in Stone.
These pyramids we wrought for you
will stand to mark Scotia’s Exodus.

‘O Lord, next year in Jerusalem.’

It was once believed that Scotia was an ancient Jewish Princess from the twelfth tribe of Israel.

Got my Scottish blood coursing through my veins, it did! Yes, let our people go indeed!

We are not part of anyone's dark agenda and Scots will never EVER be lapdogs.

You are the re-incarnation of Agnes Douglas of Blackness Castle (Black Agnes). A thorn in the side of all invaders.

Thank you so much for the nom and the vote. In reality I suspect you're much more that souple Jade Cutty Sark !!

cheers,

written with your usual skill and panache. Almost a battle hymn for a new republic. Mike

Cheers Mike,

A Republic? We should be so lucky!

When I bought my first set of clubs and fled South, a friend said to me “Every Scotsman who leaves Scotland to live in England increases the average intelligence of both countries”.

But I can still recognise a wee nugget – great stuff my friend…Bozzz

Thanks ma man.

I'm afraid it's the English Public School politicians who will finally destroy the Union. They don't need my help!

cheers,

Jim

Very cleverly but, more importantly, passionately written. A battle hymn indeed. Let's hope the Welsh follow the Scots towards independence.

Congrats on nom & nib; well deserved.

Cheers.

Hi Tony,

Glad you enjoyed it. I suspect if Scotland does manage the break, Wales will go too.

cheers,

Jim

Aye Jim! As in divorce, sometimes separation is the thing that brings you together…like the relationship we in the U.S. have with our mother.

I reiterate compliments on both counts of nib and nom.

Greg 🙂

Author’s Reply:
As usual you make perfect sense Greg. I would happily exist alongside my English friends (if the fence is high enough).

cheers,

Jim

this comes across as passionately truthful, nobly independent and restrained. a very cool write that made good use of allusions to tie it all neatly – especially your bitter herbs/unholycow-golden calf/old etonian pharaoh.

a nib well-worn 😀

The last thing Scotland likens itself to

is Israel

Author’s Reply:
Not sure what the point of your comment is? I'm not aware Scotland likens herself to anything, though her oral tradition of being the lost tribe of Israel is certainly well documented.

I wonder if my poetry were of love or death, whether you would still debate my interpretation Roy? It smacks of an omniscience you don't possess. How very 'David Cameron' of you.

well, well, now the israelis are as I write this are commiting genocide on Palestine

now your post reeks of jewish propoganda

ie

Golden Calf

Let our People go

I was born Scottish and I will die Palestian and trust me

I will never be jewish, no,nae never, evil, evil, evil people

them israelis

Author’s Reply:
Hi Roy,

My verse works or it wouldn't engage you as it does. Unfortunately your willingness to debate my allegorical poem smacks of antisemitism and the which, if acted on, should see you living in some middle eastern hell-hole, dying from frustrated hatred.

I can admire your Anti-war, Anti-imperialist commitment, I just can't afford to share it. My passion is spent advocating my own country's independence whilst enjoying the sun on my back.

cheers,

Jim

antisemitism?????????

no, I just say what I see, they could be jedists

and I would still oppose their tyranny

as for indepenence, indepenence from what?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there isn't even a draft yet

of any constitution for indepenence, infact Fiona Hyslop

just looks at you with a blank stare when you mention it.

The utopia of indepenence smacks of an omniscience the Scots don't possess.

How very 'David Cameron' of them.

Author’s Reply:
We must agree to disagree Roy, as I think is the case for Scots everywhere. I suppose my main contention is that the tired Union that was never equitable, and is now spent, should be replaced.

I witness the 3 Ring Circus of Westminster and immediately conclude that the solution cannot lie there.

I am a socialist, not SNP at all. I simply share their ultimate aim, not their vision.

Nonetheless, I have been happy to, and will remain happy to exchange views with you.

cheers,

Jim

Okay,

where's the constitution?

We must have the fundamentals of a constitution,

because so far,it's the blind leading the blind,

or more of the same, which results in westminister policy

just being moved to Holyrood.

Well, there we have it. I always thought you were French.

Anyway, excellent poem. Fave story and nomination from me.

Nice references to Thatcher and the Conservative Party in general.

Do you speak Doric?
