I used to love him when I was in the depths of my black depression. He used to make me weep and wallow further in my despair. He fed my misery beautifully with lines like this:

'The burden of dead faces. Out of sight
And out of love, beyond the reach of hands,
Changed in the changing of the dark and light,
They walk and weep about the barren lands
Where no seed is nor any garner stands,
Where in short breaths the doubtful days respire,
And time's turned glass lets through the sighing sands;
This is the end of every man's desire.'

and

Yet may love, sore wounded scarce recover
Strength and spirit again, with life receding:
Hope and joy, wind-winged, about him hover:
Love lies bleeding.

Oscar Wilde said of him this:

He was a braggart in matters of vice, who had done everything he could to convince his fellow citizens of his homosexuality and bestiality without being in the slightest degree a homosexual or a bestializer

There was one in particular which made me even more suicidal, but luckily I can't find it now :-)

He certainly was a miserable sod, in any event...

okay. someone on the radio said, quite rightly, that if all the north pole melted, it would make no difference to the water level of the earth. Why? Because when a body floats (the north pole is just one big block of ice floating around) the weight of the body is equal to the weight of water displaced. When water freezes, it expands. So the whole of the north pole icecap, if melted, would simply fill the hole it left in the sea. okay - the more perceptive ones will say 'ahah' but the ice is fresh water, and the sea is salt, therefore denser, so there will be a net increase in water volume. Yes, there will , bt only about 2percent of the total. If the sea warms up a bit the water will go down in volume anyway (it has max density at 4deg C).

However, that still leaves us with ice that is on land, such as Antarctica proper, glaciers etc.

never thought of it before ... :-)

There's a headline 'Pound falls against Dollar'

It's a bit like 'Continent cut off - Fog in Channel'

a year ago, the dollar had fallen against the pound, drastically, then, compared with the euro, the pound began to follow (you can check the graphs) so the euro was then 80p (against the 7 years of 66p since its creation) and the dollar and pound stayed on par. Now, the dollar is recovering against the euro as the US economy seems to be improving. The pound is not. So it's not so much the pound falling (still the same vs the euro) it's the dollar coming up - and not bringing the pound with it. Why? Because the UK has many banking and loan companies owned by US companies, and they both made the same mistakes in overloaning and poor security.

If our government is so good, why can't they do as good as good 'ol GeeDubblya?

I'm off to Port Rush (N Ireland) this weekend as engineer with one of our vintage aircraft (De Havilland Dove) as it's performing in an air display. We're also taking seven passengers there and back. Upon enquiry, it appears that said passengers are Charlie Chaplin and John Cleese impersonators for some occasion in Coleraine. Should make for some interesting in-flight photographs...

Since uk authors moved servers I have noticed that a lot of my socks have gone missing. I realise that configuration issues are still ongoing with regards to uka, but a little more information relating to the aforementioned sock issue would be appreciated.

It may be that I'm just not looking hard enough, but I can't find a button to move from the forum back to UKAuthors.com. I have to go back into 'favourites' and select it again. There used to be a button at the top of the page to do this, and another one to go to UKA Press. It would be good to have those back.

Also, while change is in the air, is it possible to integrate the forum and the main site so that when you log into one you're logged into the other? It would be terrific if you stayed logged in to the main site when you called up a new copy of Explorer (or any other browser), which works for the forum at the moment but not for the main site.

I can't use my html editor in Firefox because it needs Active-X to run, which FF doesn't support. It's annoying to have to change browser just for this (the only thing I now use IE for) especially as my IE frequently seizes.
Anyone know if there's a FF add-on solution for this?

when i convert pages of a document in publisher to 'commercial printing CMYK plus spot colours' which is required for the printing pdf, the colour in the illustrations (originally RGB ) is faithfully recreated in CMYK. HOWEVER - any text, or frames etc created in publisher, changes completely.

I have text in a a nice dark blue - it changes to black - when I look at the colour picker - there is no true blue any more, it either goes to black, or becomes a paler pastel shade. Yet the same colours in the illustrations are fine. I suppose I could turn the text into picture, and it would work, but is there another way???
