BGBS

We could eat there, but better seems to be for everybody to bring something for a buffet and to bring their own booze or drink for the evening.
We are inviting the staff of the Big Green Book Shop (BGBS) to attend and partake in the Party so I would ask everyone to make sure that they are offered a drink if their glasses become empty.

Last year Middle Earth Net offered to video the event - would they or someone else have a go? I hope some people will photograph it as well.

We will need volunteers to help set up at 6pm and volunteers to help organise it. Please email me - address below - if you would like to volunteer.

If you are going to come please let me know. In particular let me know if you intend to perform your work. Original works will be given preference but there is no requirement that these works should be new i.e not previously posted on UKA, or even not previously performed at a UKALive event. I see no reason why someone should not perform a piece that is not theirs - i.e just a favourite poem or short story. Indeed I think it would be a good idea for people to bring some favourite pieces to read or perform in case we run out of performers and have time to do something else. E.G. I have a piece I did for the Friends of the Royal Shakespeare Company in Newcastle at the Theatre Royal there at the Shakespeare Birthday Celebration called 'Time's Medley' a compilation of various well known speeches from Shakespeare's plays. Some people might like to get together and produce and ensemble performance.

The best way I think is for all those who want to come to email me at davidmturner@blueyonder.co.uk This will allow me to keep all the responses together and easily count how much interest we have. There is also a maximum attendance of 50 people at the BGBS
so if necessary the first to notify me will be the first to be confirmed as participants. I hope to have slots of about 10 minutes for those who wish to perform their work. I hope that we will have some well prepared performances with short works being memorised and props and costumes being used if appropriate.

If you have any other ideas or comments then of course just post them below.

David

Well done David. I can provide a sound system, including a radio mic, and take some videos. I'll also do a 10 minute slot – I usually write a new story for each UKAlive.

Would you like me to sound out Rick Hayter and/or Kirsty and Jon re live music?

That all sounds great David - live music at intervals would be fine and hopefully some members will bring some songs they have written along - In fact I will threaten to sing again that should make them respond!-)

At the monent there are 7 confirmations of people attending - I am expecting John Shaw and Bobby Ginswick (if John is well enough) and Jolen and James to confirm soon. Get those diaries out folks and make it a date and send me an email to say you are coming. We have several musicians booked so I may NOT have to sing:-)

David, there are a few organisational things you'll need to think about, especially as you have effectively two venues.

I. Somebody is going to need to go over to the bookshop and help to lay out the tables and move the chairs around, about 6.00 pm when the shop closes. I don't think I can do that AND set up the sound and camera(s).

2. Somebody (preferably more than one) is going to need to stay behind and help tidy up at the end. You'll need one or two black binbags.

3. The multi-storey car park is locked up at midnight as far as I remember, so you need to be careful that anybody with a car in there leaves the shop by about 11.30 latest so as not to get caught out. You can't park legally anywhere near the shop, although late at night you normally get away with it for the few minutes it takes to load/unload. Unloading at 6.00 is more of a problem (often there simply isn't a space – it's all resident parking and yellow lines).

4. You're going to need to provide glasses to drink out of, plates to eat from and cutlery to eat with. Also if pos a big tablecloth for the table where the food is laid out. I have some plastic cups, spoons, paper plates etc. but not a lot because we used most of them at one of Jean's charity events a few weeks back. I'll try to come with 'filler' items like a big potato salad and maybe bread and cheese.

5. You'll need to make a definite decision about when the food is to be eaten and enforce it. If you leave people to their own devices they'll just wander around with a plate and a glass all evening and chatter. The food part of the evening has to be clearly defined, then people sit down for the readings+music. We did it at half time at the last event I organised and it worked well.

Only 3 weeks to wait folks till the UKALive bash and I am expecting we are going to have a great time. This just in: I have it on good authority that Mr. and Mrs. Whitworth will be attending, although it appears that Mr. Whitworth won't be reading due to the severe trauma caused by his wife's driving. Mrs. Whitworth is going to give it a go, despite being blind as a bat and twice as flighty.

Well, there you have it, folks, The Whitworth's are coming.

Thanks, Andrea. I can't wait. It is another opportunity to put my foot down in Betty on the motorway. Which reminds me, the other day I was driving somewhere, James was with and out of nowhere, says, "I think there's something wrong with your car."

I thought, what? But asked what he was talking about as she's been running smooth as a baby's butt. He replies, "it never slows down!" LOL Oh, is that all? Darlin', well, don't you worry your pretty little head about that. winking smiley Youth today, eh? They're just too damn cautious!

Just out of curiosity, will there be some way to warm food up? I just wondered. I'll bring my world famous fried chicken (which can be served either warm or cold) and my uncommonly scrumptious potato salad and carrot cake. That should feed an army!

I don't think there's anything except an elecrtric kettle behind the scenes at The Big Green Bookshop. You could bring your own microwave oven perhaps, if Betty could accommodate it. I would offer to bring one, but I think my boot will be pretty full.

That's a good idea, David, although I dislike using the microwave to heat up my chicken. It's better in an oven or cold. But yes, Betty can pack some junk in her trunk as those damn Yankees are so fond of saying. I just took a complete dining table and four chairs down to Gloucester, along with a dog (He wasn't in the boot) crate, a huge suitcase, coffee maker, plant stand and a ton of other stuff in her.

Here's her boot:

I have not done a schedule yet - the number of people who have confirmed their attendance suggests that everyone should bring plenty of work to read and even some favourite poetry books or short story books to read from. You can read anything you like in whatever style you like. David Sirat will be reading some short stories, David's two musician friends will be playing and singing and reading I and my old friend Gwen are going to perform a short one act one scene play. I will do some performnce poetry with costume and props. I will also sing a Geordie Mining Song that I have embellished(Sorry Folks - you have been warned:-)

If you know what you are going to do reply to this, quoting the post and we will all get an idea of what to expect.

Oh my goodness. A general mix of my poems -- the serious and the really daft. No good telling you now which ones as I'm sure to forget.
